TENNIS CHAMPIONS

NEW ZEALAND TOURNAMENT. RESULTS OF YESTERDAY’S GAMES. ANDREWS REACHES SEMI-FINAL. , v [By Telegraph.—Special to Standard.] AUCKLAND, Dec. 30. In the scorching heat of the afternoon sun Bartleet beat Sims in a hard fought five set match at the New Zealand lawn tennis championships. It was a game full of brilliant surprises. Both players made wonderful recoveries, playing shots that appeared almost impossible. For the most part it was a baseline game, but when the players came into the net clever and spectacular exhibition of volleying was seen. Bartleet stood the strain of the match better and after two sets all had called he had practically established his superiority. Sims fought pluckily, but Bartleet was very safe and gained an early lead which he maintained and ran out at 6—3 in the final set. ANDREWS IN GOOD FORM. Andrews made a great recovery in his match with Wilson. (Wellington). Ho was behind at two sets to onp 4—5 and love—3o, but he played gamely 1 - and with brilliant burst took the fourth set at 9 —7 and the next at 6—l. The Palmerston North boy took a long time to settle down, frequently driving out and netting. Wilson was a long way below the form he showed yesterday when he beat Norman Peach, but he was a little steadier than Andrews. Occasionally in the first three sets he camo into the net and volleyed brilliantly. He was using a good side line drive that was at times effective, but his overhead work was the only consistent part of his play. When Andrews won the fourth set the match was his. Wilson tired quickly and Andrews was quick to take advantage of any opening. It was not often he went up to the net, but when he did it was to angle a beautiful shot to the side line or to kill a weak one with a terrific smash. He was volleying well and his overhead work was spectacular. In the last set Andrews had Wilson running all over the court. He used a clever variety of strokes, varying them nicely, and coming up to the net to win many points with clean placements. Wilson appeared to be done and a great deal of patball play was seen. Andrews made fewer mistakes, however, and won the set and match, 6—3, 3—6, I—6, 9—7, 6—l. Selwyn.” It is, as may b surmised, PLAYERS IN SEMI-FINALS. The singles are out to the semifinals, in which the contestants will be as follow: Men: North (Sydney) v. Haege (Melbourne) and Bartleet (Auckland v. Andrews (Palmerston North). Ladies: Miss Spiers (Christchurch) v. Miss Watson (Sydney), Mrs Melody (Wellington) v. Miss Howe (Wellington). In the men’s doubles Haege and Malfroy, having beat Seay and Andrews, now tackle Knott and Sturt. The winning pair (the former for a certainty) will face North and McCausland (Sydney) in one semi-final, while the other will.be fought.,out between Peach Bros. (Sydney) and Bartleet and Robson (Auckland). The Dominion championship 1923 title holders, Peacock and Wilson (Wellington) fell to North and McCausland (Sydney) in a strenuous fiveset battle in the third round. There was a great surprise in the ladies’ doubles, when Mrs Melody and Miss Spiers (singles champions for the past three years) were defeated in the doubles semi-final by Misses Knight and Colebrook, leaving the Aucklanders to tackle the Sydney-siders, Misses Lloyd and Watson, in the final.
