HEAVY GALE.
DAMAGE OVER WEEK-END. Palmerston North over the week-end experienced one of the heaviest gales that it lias had of recent years. After high winds had held sway the previous night, the gale rose in all its intensity on Saturday morning and throughout the day caused considerable damage and inconvenience. _ Last night, when rain fell with tropic-like intensity, the wind again rose in almost hurricane velocity, but by this morning its force had lessened.
Private orchards and gardens suffered considerably, trees being practically stripped bare of early fruit in some instances, while vegetable growers had every cause to regret the intensity of the wind and ram. Professional orchardists, however, report no serious damage, their frees being well sheltered. A few plums, it is stated, were blown off, but otherwise there was apparently no damage. .
