WIRELESS WORLD

PUBLIC LOUD SPEAKERS. ENGLISH TOWN’S ACTION. MAY BE CLASSED AS NUISANCE. y [By Electric Telegraph.—Copyright.] Received July 26, 9.25 a.m. LONDON, July 25. There is a danger of wireless loud speakers being legally classified as public nuisances. The Town Council of Reading has taken the initiative. It obtained the Government’s sanction to a by-law providing a £5 penalty against anyone operating loud speakers upon, or near, public places. The idea was to prevent wireless shops from attracting obstructive crowds, but the Reading residents, like others throughout Britain, transport the speakers into a garden during the summer evenings and find an ideal way of enjoying the programmes. Legal authority is of opinion that, before a householder can be prevented from using a loudspeaker in his own garden, it would be necessary to obtain an injunction from the court. Mere councils are powerless. Another oouncil, that of Sidcup, threatens to emulate Reading. _lt classes outdoor wireless with Salvation Army bands and boy scouts’'bugles, declaring that these are instruments of torture and must be stopped.—Sydney Sun cable.
