AUSTRALIAN TARIFF.
CAUSE OF DIMINUTION. in britiseTexports. LONDON, July 21. I Mr J. L. Tattersall, chairman at the 1 meeting of the English Sewing Cotton Company, strongly commented on Australia’s action in raising heavy tariff barriers and according only a small preferential advantage to British goods. The returns showed that last year Lancashire and Yorkshire suffered a severe diminution of exports to Australia. It would almost appear that the only export the colonies were prepared to admit freely was British capital. He urged Lancashire and Yorkshire men .- bers of the House of Commons t > tackle the Government on these mat' ters with a view to a frank discussioi ! of reciprocal relations with the colonies at the Imperial Conference.—A. and N.Z. cable.
