FOSSILISED REMAINS
FOUND NEAR KAWHIA. INTERESTING DISCOVERY. [By Telegraph.—Special to Standard.] AUCKLAND, July 22. Interest has been aroused by the discovery in a mass of rock near Ivawhia of what , are believed to be tho fossilised remains of some animal. Scientific investigation will be neces- , sary to establish whether the impres- , sions are those of a prehistoric Beast or bird. 1 The fossils are embedded at an angle j of about 45 degrees in a mass of con- j cretionary rock. Portions of what ap- 1 pear to bo a spinal column are show- ■ ing at intervals of about six feet, but it is impossible to tell the exact length without removing a considerable portion of ,rock. What appear to be vertebrae are about four inches long and from two inches to two and a-half ■ inches in width'. Portions suggesting the outline of a pelvis bone are also showing, but here again excavation is necessary before a definite statement can be made.
The curator of tho museum, Mr G. E. Arcliey, said he intended to make an examination, and until he had done so ho could not give an indication of the geological significance of the discovery. It was possible that the markings were the impression of moa bones or those of prehistoric reptiles, several examples of which had been found in New Zealand.
