SHANNON NEWS.

[F#oni Our Own Correspondent.] The ordinary meeting of the Shannon Borough Council was held on Tuesday, there being present Councillors Thwaites, Roberts, Downes, Curran, Watkins, Spencer, Richardson and Hook. An apology for absence was received from tho Mayor (Mr E. Butt). Councillor Thwaites occupied tho chair. Messrs Carter, Hay and Baldwin, representing the Manawatu-Oroua River Board, addressed the council on the Man-awatu-Oroua River Board’s scheme, for combating the common menace of tho flooding of the Manawatu and Oroua Rivers. Mr Carter said his board resolved that when 'the scheme proposed was ready, to placo the details before the local bodies concerned. The speaker referred to Shannon being situated in the centre of a farming district and the damage by floods to Shannon. Reference was made to some of the finest land in New Zealand, but much of it was unproductive owing to its liability to flood. Tho principal benefits which the borough would receive was an increase in the value and safoty from flooding of the land in this district with a consequent increased population and rating value; great improvements.in all facilities of transport and communication; better arid more effective drainage; the safe-guarding of tho lands now liable to flooding and the appreciation in’-value of thoso lands, with a consequent appreciation in value of all the lands in the vicinity. Tho speaker said as a ratepayer in the Borough he had no hesitation in supporting tho scheme. If all tho country round Shannon was closely settled it would make a big difference to the township. Mr Hay, with the aid of a map, explained tho schemo. Tho length of the now channel would bo 22 miles as against 56 miles as at present. The estimated cost was £45,000. It would render immune from flooding all the lands in tho area now subject to inundation. Tho speakers asked for the council’s assistance in supporting the schemo as a national one, and an endeavour mado to get State support. A vote of thanks was accorded tho representatives for their addresses, the council assuring them that the matter will have consideration, and representatives appointed to tho conference. s On the motion of Cr. Spencer it was resolved to use tho £IOO on the estimates for footpath formation, which would do something in relieving tho unemployment.
