RAILWAY OFFICERS.
CONFERENCE AT AUCKLAND. Per Press Association. .. ... . . AUCKLAND, June 25. The annual conference of the Railway Officers Institute opened to-day, the president, Mr V. R. J. Stanley, presiding. In his opening remarks, the president said it was desirable that delegates should endeavour to transact business expeditiously, as conferences consumed a large portion of the institute’s income. Members of their society throughout the Dominion would bo keenly watching, and hoping that the conference would result in something tangible being done in their interests, and he exhorted delegates to make the wisest possible decisions from tho railway point of view. Times had changed materially, and t at present might be said to be in the transition stage; they had yet to find out exactly where they were. The annual report and balance-sheet was adopted on the motion ,of the president and Mr L. Barclay, tho president stating during tho -discussion that in tho matter of finance,, the institute was sailing pretty clos%to the wind, the subscription members being the lowest of any industrial organisation in Australasia. The remainder of the day was occupied in tliseussing remits dealing with salaries and tho regrading of positions, finality in connection with that portion of the agenda paper, not being reached when the conference rosa.
