AMBULANCE REQUIRED. [From Our Own Correspondent.] 4 special meeting of the Borough Council was held on Saturday, the Mayor (Mr W. E. Carthew) presiding. Also present, wore Crs. A. H. Sutton, L. A. Elliott, A. McCorkindalo, E. Faire D. Pryde, J. Corpo and A. Stewart. The schedule of rates struck at the last council meeting was conlirrfiod and the council then entered upon a discussion regarding the question of an ambulance for Fcilding and district'.. 4 deputation from Palmerston North, which waited upon the council at last, meeting, solicited the help of the council in an endeavour to raiso funds for comforts for patients at the hospital, and it was then suggested that any money raised in Fcilding should go toward procuring an ambulance for this district. Saturday’s meeting of tho council went more fully into the question and considered the clanger m vital cases of having to await the arrival of a conveyance from Palmerston North. Whilst fully recognising the need and benefits accruing from a “comfort fund,” tho council was of the opinion that this town and district should set out to raise, separately, £l5O, which sum, carrying tho Government- subsidy of £1 for £l, would be quite sufficient to purchase and equip an ambulance. The vehicle could bo stationed in a local garage and maintenance and upkeep charges would amount to very little. It was finally decided to ask tho Manawatu, Oroua and Kiwitca County Councils if they would bo prepared to shoulder a quarter of tho maintenance charges, should sufficient funds bo raised to purchase an ambulance. TIIE UNEMPLOYED. Saturday’s special Borough Council meeting discussed the unemployment problem, tho Mayor slating that ho had received a number of applications for work, and he thought,some organised schemo was necessary whereby the position might bo alleviated. A suggestion to writo to the Public Works Department and inquire if some sort of public work in the district could not be got under weigh was adopted and it was also decided to establish a labour bureau at the council chambers at which men seeking work could leave their names. With regard to tho more urgent cases it was decided to bring tho facts of tho problem as clearly ae possible before tho local public, the idea being that oven ono or two days’ work might temporarily relievo some acute sufferer. CHELTENHAM DAIRY’ COY. The output of butter at the Makino factory last month was 64 tons, an increase of 174 per cent, on tho corresponding period of last year, and tho grading averago was 92.52 points. The company is adfancing Is 6d per lb for. butter-fat supplied during May. At the annual general meeting this year Messrs' K. Sinclair, of Cheltenham and IN. M. McLennan, of Tlaleombo. aro the two directors to retire, both gentlemen offering themselves for roelection. HOCKEY. In the hockey matches on Saturday NYcsIcy boat Wanderers by six goals to nil, while Pirates beat Stanway by three goals to one. PERSONALS. Mr J. Aitkcn, of the Wnndorers’ Hockey Club, received a nasty blow on tho forehead on Saturday afternoon, whilst playing for his club. The injury necessitated Mr Aitkcn retiring from the game to receive medical attention. Arrangements in connection with the Foilding amateurs’ production of “Why Smith Left Home,” are well forward and rehearsals are going off with a swing.
