MUNICIPAL BAND

ANNUAL MEETING. } Mr J. A. Nash, M.P., occupied the chair at the annual general meeting of the Palmerston North Municipal Band held last night. Approximately 40 members were present, and an apology for absence was received from Mr A. J. Graham. The annual report (previously published in the “Standard' 1 ) and balancesheet were read and adopted. During the discussion: that followed the chairman, in reviewing the activities of the band for the last season, stated that the results achieved had been most satisfactory. In connection with the appointment of a resident conductor, negotiations were being continued, and it was confidently expected that the matter would be finalised at an early date. The new conductor would be paid an annual sum, but matters relative to' his employment would rest entirely with the official himself, and the committee was not definitely arranging these details, although assistance \vould be rendored. The state of the band’s finances, continued the speaker, was most pleasing; such an institution should never be wealthy, or public support would be lost. With' the recent generous grant made by the Borough Council better service could be promised. ELECTION OF OFFICERS. The question of letting the band hall for entertainments was discussed, and it was resolved to rent same to a local institution desirous of securing it. The members of the band decided to play selections at the Winter Show during the evening sessions throughout tlve week. A suggestion was received that the band travel to Flock House on July 27 to render a programme of music at tile annual reunion in connection with the hostel, and it was decided to accept the invitation, if a suitable conveyance. were supplied. Mr Hildreth moved a motion that a club be formed in conjunction with tile junior members of the band, and tiiat a small charge .be made for tuition. This, he thought, would materially assist in bringing the members to a standard when they could be transferred to any vacancy which might occur in the ranks of the senior band. The chairman explained that one of the conditions with regard to the new conductor was that ho should give instruction to the junior players. The proposal was eventually left m the hands of the committee for consideration. Sergeant D. Davis was presented with a medal .for the highest number of attendances at practiced.
