No less than 1G marriages were solemnised at Hamilton during tlio Eastertide. During the past few months the Hunteivillo Town Board has expended over £IOOO in street improvements. The Jtangitikei County Council has decided to support the recommendation of the Pahiutua County Council that tho Manawatu Gorge road be declared a national highway. Mr Maurice Brownlie is the latest candidate in the field for one of the Hawke’s Bay County seats on tho Napier Harbour Board, states the Hawke’s Bay Herald. Tho feeling among many motorists —that the present system of annual registration of cars is a laborious hardship—found expression at a 'Wanganui County Council meeting, when Cr McGregor condemned the new system as a useless waste of time and money, caused by the whim of a Government Minister. “A German general told me, before tho war, except for the indignity, ho would rather bo a prisoner in Now Zealand than a general in Germany,” remarked a member of tho Honorary Justices’ Association at the annual meeting at Wellington. The observation arose out of the contention of one Justico that the inmates of tho local prisons were being “spoon-fed.” Speaking of train wrecks to a reporter, a Wanganui resident said that the most complete derailment lie had known was one which occurred accidentally in the Auckland district about 20 years ago. A number of empty sacks fell from one of the trucks on to the rails, and the train, being unable to cut through the fibrous material, stopped dead as though it bad collided with a solid wall, and overturned. After deferring consideration of the matter on several occasions the Pohangina County Council, at Saturday’s meeting, decided to accede in part to tho request of a public meeting, held at Apiti on December 28, to have four electric street lights erected at Apiti township. Tho council resolved to have one light installed provided that the total cost does not exceed £4 10s. A man walking along Lome street, Auckland, had a narrow escape from a rather singular accident. The whole of one of those iron-framed windows, which are a feature of modern buildings, caine adrift and went hurtling through the air towards the pavement. In coming dow<n it evidently canted outwards, states an exchange, and struck the hood of a motor car which was standing alongside the kerb. It then fell on the footpath, tho glass being splintered to utoms. It landed just a few seconds after a man had passed tho spot. There are simple methods of sight testing commonly usod and mado use of by men. otherwise unqualified to test tho sight; but a proper test of tho sight involves sovoral scientific tests that can only be made by ono well qualified to .do it and experienced in tho work.
