LAWN TENNIS

NEW ZEALANDERS’ TOUR. BEATEN BY NEW SOUTH WALES. ANDREWS WINS SINGLES GAME. (By Electric Telegraph.—Copyright.) SYDNEY, April 9. The first serious game in which the New Zealand tennis representatives have participated took place to-day, when the visitors met New South Wales, whose team, with the exception of Anderson, was the best available, The weather was ideal, there being no wind, and the bright sunshine caused little trouble. The New Zealanders, although beaten, gave a very creditable display, especially Wallace and Symth, who, in the doubles, beat Kahns nnd Williard, New South Waless’ strongest combination. In the singles France and Andrews gained victories against Cummings and Peach respectively. Cummings appeared not to exert himself too much. France cleverly placed the hall well away from him. Wallace and Baker provided the bestli singles exhibition. Baker’s backhand play was on the weak side, and Wallace took full advantage of this. Baker, however, who is a Lull man with a long reach, gained many points at the net. Seay commenced well against Kalins, but tired in the second and third sets. Andrews, driving forcefully’, kept Peach on the run. Jn the doubles tho New Zealanders’ combination was not all that it should be. This doubtless was due in large measure to the lack of practice, owing to recent wet weather. In the first set of tho games against Kahns and Williard, tho New Zealanders Wallace and Smyth kept to the back-line, and consequently lost. In the second and third sets they came forward to tho net, volleyed their opponents’ strokes, and won. The following are the scores, the New South Wales players being mentioned first:— SINGLES.
