SEND-OFF TO ROSE.
RECEPTION AT WELLINGTON. . “L SHALL DO MY BEST.” l\r Press Association. WELLINGTON, April 9. There was a most enthusiastic gathering in tho civic send-off to Randolph A. Rose, who, accompanied by Mr J.. W. McHolm, his trainer and mentor, will leave for Auckland, en route to England, to meet tho world champion, Nurmi. Mr C. B. Norwood, the Mayor, spoke of the splendid progress made by Rose on cross-country and the running track, and how proud New Zealand was of its champion. Tho Prime Minister, Hon. J. G. Coates, congratulated .tho champion and the Athletic Association on tho success achieved in connection with the proposed tour. New Zealanders were proud of Rose and pleased that one of 'their boys had risen to such eminence on the athletic field that-he had become fit to measure strides with tho world champion. Ho wished him success, and said that the whole of tho people of New Zealand would follow his progress with great interest. Mr Jordan, Mayor of Masterton, spoke on behalf of the people of that district. He was pleased, he said, 4.0 be able to participate in such a stirring send-off. Rose was .not now a district man; ho belonged to, and represented, New Zealand. Mr E. Wilton, on behalf of the New Zealand Amateur Athletic Association, said that the matter of sending Rose abroad had been left to the public and a splendid response had been made. Rose would be running in the English championships at Stamford Bridge on July 3, and hoped then to meet Nurmi.
Rose, who was cheered, said: “I shall .do my best.”
