COURT RETURNS.

FOR FIRST QUARTER OF 1926. The local Magistrate’s Court returns for tho first three months of 1926 show a fair increase of business handled as compared with tho figures for the corresponding period of last year. For the three months ended on March 81 last 355 males and ten females appeared before the court on criminal or quasi-criminal charges, whereas for the corresponding period of 1920 tho figures were 269 and nine respectively. A total of £8724 was sued for, and of this amount £4870 was recovered. For the first quarter of 1925 the figures were £6484 and £4343. The number of plaints entered was 690, an increase of 219. Civil fees paid into court showed an advance of from £SOO 18s 6d to £505 17s, and criminal fees an advance of from £46 Is 6d to £66 10s. Fines paid went up from £233 19s to £514 19s.
