WAR ON “JAZZ AGE.”
CAMPAIGN IN ROME. “PETTING PARTIES” BARRED. ROME, March 30. Taxicab “petting parties/” have been banished in the “Eternal City by tho latest edict in a nation-wide campaign against tho growing influence of the “jazz age.” All taxicabs equipped with shades which may be drawn across the windows have had these shades fastened shut by means of tiny locks, each of the locks bearing the lead seal of the Rome prefect, so that a chauffeur who permits a client to break a seal to shut himself off from the public view can easily he caught. A fine is the penalty. For several weeks the authorities of all the cities of the kingdom have beon raiding and closing dance halls of all descriptions. This campaign is rigorously sponsored by the Holy bee. Another campaign is being waged against alleged questionable boqks. Half a dozen important trials against publishers are going on in Florence and Milan. Only modern and nonclassical books, however, are affected. Boccaocio, Cassanova, Cellini, Aretino and other classics rest firmly installed in public favour, and no one has ever thought of banning them.
