At an auction sale in Wellington yesterday a total of £205 was received lor 10 street fruit stands for the ensuing quarter.

Sinco March 25 the Manawatu County Council has issued 012 motor drivers’ licenses, it being estimated that some 230 still remain to bo taken out.

A five-roomed house occupied by Mr Tom Sanson, Oliakea, and owned by tho Sanson estate, was destroyed by fire tho other afternoon. Mr Sanson and others were engaged in their usual farm work when the conflagration was noticed, but the fire then had a strong hold and house and contents went up in smoke.

Since tho installation of the punt at Shannon to cope with the traffic requirements pending the erection of the now bridge, an expenditure of £2077 has been entailed by the contributing bodies, and of . which tho Manawatu County Council’s share is £519 ss. The opinion was expressed at yesterday’s meeting of tho council that the delay in tho erection of tho now structure was proving expensive and the expedition of tho work was most essential.

Fire destroyed Hickey’s farm building at Waiotapu on Tuesday night (states a Rotorua message). hour draught horses perished. The building, which was very large, contained implements, harness, etc., much machinery and 40 tons of hay. The loss will approximate £IOOO. Tho firq is presumed to have been caused by a naked light coming in contact with tho hay. The insurances are practically nil. A circular received at yesterday’s meeting of tho Manawatu County Council disclosed that, up to February 28, 10,238 motor car licenses had been issued in No. 9 Highways District, while 56,000 such licenses had been issued for tho whole of tho Dominion. Covering all classes of motor driven vehicles and cycles, no less than 129,848 licenses had been issued in the'Dominion during the period.

Tlie following officers were elected at the annual conference of the United Firo Brigades’ Association, held at Petone: President, Deputy-Superin-tendent Mortland (Taihape); vice-pre-sidents, deputy-Superintendent Doran (Lower Hutt), Foreman O’Neill (Hastings), Foreman C. Braggins (Masterton) and Foreman Silbery (Petone). Past-president Burrows installed the newly-elected executive, on behalf of whom lio was presented with the pastpresident’s badgo of honour. Very soon Auckland people will he introduced to an entirely new type of footpath. In the past all footpaths have been sfirf-.ced with a coating of tar and sand, but the new type, which the City Council purposes to introduce as an experiment, will consist of a pavement of concrete blocks, each block being removable without disturbing the rest of the footpath. A short section in Queen street will be laid down as an initial part of the scheme. Owing to a leak in the benzine tank, F. H. Gallagher’s motor-bus, engaged in a suburban service, caught fire at Auckland late on Tuesday night. The bus was full of passengers, who Tall got out safely, two making their exit through a window of the bus. The (lames almost destroyed the vehicle, and only died out when the benzine alj burned away. The fire brigade took control of the fire, which attracted a large crowd. - Mr G. V. Hudson, the well-known astronomer, of Karori, stated yesterday that the sun’s face had been almost clear of spots during the past three or four weeks. Yesterday morning there were only two tiny si>ots visible, and these were diminishing rather than increasing in size. Mr Hudson made it quite clear that there were times when the face of the sun was quite clear, but such had not been the case for many months past. Indeed, tho past year had been one of 'considerable solar activity and those who believed the theory that spots on the sun had a bearing on meteorological conditions on earth had the satisfaction of knowing that tho “spot” period was one of unsettled weather, whilst with tho clearing of the sun’s face the weather had been a great deal more settled. There arc simple methods of sight testing commonly used and made use. of by men otherwise unqualified to lest tho sight; but a proper test of tho sight involves several scientific tests that can only bo made by ono well qualified to do it and experienced in the work.
