Hudson, the well-known astronomer, of Karori, stated yesterday that the sun’s face had been almost clear of spots during the past three or four weeks. Mr Hudson made it quite clear that there were times when the face of the sun was quite clear, but such had not been the case for many months past. Indeed, tho past year had been one of 'considerable solar activity and those who believed the theory that spots on the sun had a bearing on meteorological conditions on earth had the satisfaction of knowing that tho “spot” period was one of unsettled weather, whilst with tho clearing of the sun’s face the weather had been a great deal more settled. There arc simple methods of sight testing commonly used and made use. of by men otherwise unqualified to lest tho sight; but a proper test of tho sight involves several scientific tests that can only bo made by ono well qualified to do it and experienced in the work.
