H.AI.S. EMERALD. EFFECT OF LEAKAGES. COLOAIBO, Alarch 26. H.AI.S. Emerald, the fastest cruiser in the world, on her maiden voyage to China arrived here in a leaky condition. The defects are believed to be more serious than was at first thought. On the voyage out, during her speed test, she averaged 31.5 knots for 24 consecutive hours. Alany rivets were loosened and a defect developed in one of tile,, screw shafts. One plate lias been replaced. The leakages into the fresh water tanks amidsliips are regarded as important, because of the possibility of boiler corrosion and tlie loss of speed in consequence of the use of slightly brackish water.
