FLOATING FURNACE.
PAPAROA’S FATE. CREW’S HOPiLESS FIGHT. CAPETOWN, March 20. The crew of the abandoned steamer Paparoa arrived on the P. and O. Branch liner Barrabool. There were few passengers, but five Liverpool stowaways who were arrested here. xciTiuie experiences on a ship alight from stem to stern were related by the chief officer. The bunkers were filled with gas, and firemen helped tho overpowered trimmers. There were four explosions in the bunkers. Valuable pigeons were released. At midnight, when tho whole, deck was licked with flames, the captain decided to abandon the ship. The sides of the vessel had bulged, and she had canted over, compelling the crew to go barefooted. The chief engineer and the wireless operators, cut off front their lifeboat, jumped into the sea, and then clambered aboard it.
After their two days’ battle the exhausted officers and crew of i Paparoa flung themselves down oir the deck of the Barrabool and slept with': out food. '••Sir
