MEN OUT OF WORK

POSITION IN VICTORIA. DECLARED TO BE ACUTE. ( LITTLE HELP FROM GOVERNMENT. "" (By Electric Telegraph.—Copyright.) Received April 3, 10.45 a.m. MELBOURNE, April 3. A deputation waited on the Premier, Mr Allan, £tnd requested that work should be provided to alleviate unemployment. It .was stated that tho unemployment situation was more acute than it had ever previously been at this time of tho year, between 8000 and 10,000 men being out of work in tho city.

Mr Allan, in reply, said he did not agree with tho statement that the Ministry should find work for everybody. The trouble was that men on relief work demanded full wages, though last year showed that they did on the average only 75 per cent, of the normal amount of work. He said the increased tariff might give more work in the city, but it would reduce employment in the country, so there would be no real gain from that. He declared that the Ministry would do what it could with the money available.

A member of the deputation: “I hope you are not sending ns away with the impression that the Ministry is on the rocks and that it can do nothing.” Mr Allen: “I did not expect you to got any other impression.” Press Association.
