GOLF TOURNAMENT

COMMENCEMENT OF PLAY. A. E. EKSTEDT’S FINE ROUND. / Tho Manawatu Golf Club’s second annual Easter tournament opened today at the Hokowhitu links, which are in splendid order. If the competitors do not include as many leading players from outside the district as might be desired, tho entries are nevertheless numerous, and 84 toed off in the first half of the qualifying round, which was being played in two sections of 18 holes each. A medal handicap is conducted over each of the 18 holes of the elimination round. The players with the best 16 gross scores qualify for the Manawatu Easter Amateur championship, tho first round of which will be played on Monday morning. The next 16 best scores qualify for the Hokowhitu Handicap Trophy, to be decided by match play on club handicaps. Bogey and medal handicaps and putting competitions wiU sustain the interest of all throughout the fixture. Notable improvements to tho course include the new hole at Land’s End and the romoval of the fence along the Scandia street entrance roadway, the construction of n cattle stop having enabled the removal of the obstruction. A regular attendant at local tournaments in Colonel J. G. Hughes, of Miramar, is included in the visiting players. THE OFFICIALS. The officials controlling the tournament include the following: Messrs 11. L. Young (club captain), E. V. Spear (hon. treasurer), L. M. Abraham, H. R. Cooper, A. E. Ekstedt, AV. L. Fitzherbert, J. E. Lewis, AV. Macmillan, A. Seifert A\ r . Strang (committee) and L. A. .Abraham (club secretary). The tournament secretary is Mr H. L. Young, who is assisted by Mrs Louis Seifert. SENSATIONAL ROUND. A. E. Ekstedt, the local champion, did a sensational 72 in this morning’s qualifying round. His 74 at the last Easter fixturo was the best recorded on that occasion. His effort this morning included a two at the AVillows and four at Strang’s, a 563 yards hole, for which the bogey figure is six. Ekstedt’s morning round card read: Out: 5,4, 4,5, 4,4, 4,2, 4—36; in, 4,4, 4,3, 3,4, 4,4, 6 —36, total 72. Bogey for tho course is 79, and on this morning’s showing Ekstedt should be hard indeed to beat in the major event of the tournament. MORNING SCORES
