THRILLING ESCAPE.
FROM FLYING BULLETS. NEWCASTLE (N.S.W.), March 19. Mr W. J. Alexander, of Evcrtou street, Hamilton, soil of Alderman Alexander, ex-Mayor of Hamilton, had a thrilling escape from death at 8 p.m. yesterday. Hearing a bullet crash against the wall of his house, he went outside to investigate. He ha l just opened the door when a second bullet, fired from the direction of the common opposite, missed his head by inches. immediately ho went inside and slammed the door. Later, taking advantage of all available cover, he went in tlio direction of the street. His wifo and young son, who were very frightened, remained in the house. As he reached the roadway Mr Alexander saw a boy approaching, who appeared to bo excited. When ho saw Mr Alexander lie called out: “Ho missed mo both times.” “And he nearly got me,’ was Mr Alexander’s reply. ~ ~ According to the story told tne police, a man and woman wore sitting on the grass in Evcrton street, near Mr Alexander’s house. It is said that a boy passed by and went away. Shortly afterwards ho returned and again looked at tlio couple. It is alleged that the man then jumped up from the grass, and, taking a revolver from his pocket, fired two shots. The boy ran for his life.
