CONFERENCE OF EXPERTS.

SYDNEY, March 31

A conference of inter-Scate forestry experts is discussing the recent destructive forest fires and tho best means of avoiding them in future. The conference favoured education of the people as t-o tho value of forests, tightening up forestry legislation, establishment of a forest guard patrol, and better firebreak provisions. Tho Victorian delegate declared that he was convinced that fully 75 per cent, of fires in forest country were caused wilfully by graizers who w'ere in need of grass burning off to cause now growth.—Press Association.

PROSECUTIONS IN VICTORIA,

MELBOURNE, March 31

As a result of police investigations into the recent disastrous bush fires, prosecutions have been launched against twenty settlers for negligence. Returned soldier settlers in the closer settlement area are considered to be the chief cause of the fires, but it is known that a great deal of burning was done to promote the growth of grass. The Stato Cabinet has earmarked £IO,OOO for grass seed in the fireswept area's. The money will be lent to settlers on very easy terms. —Press Association.
