TOWN’S PROGRESS

REFLECTED IN BUILDING FIGURES. RAPID STRIDES IN LAST FIVE YEARS. The rapid development of the borough of Palmerston North during the past five years and the increasing prosperity of this town are -reflected in tho building figures for the period under review.

For theyear ended March 31,1922, permets to the value of £146,144 were issued for building purposes within the borough, while for the year ended yesterday the figure had risen to £298,495.

During the intermediate years a steady rate of progress was maintained —in 1923 the permits aggregated in value £168,271, in 1924 £227,513 and in 1925 £261,267.

For the year ended yesterday 187 permits were issued for" tho erection of private dwellings in wood at a cost of £161,094, while 23 permits were issued for private dwellings in brick or concrete, the value in this instance being £35,106. A total of 155 permits was issued for alterations and additions, tho value of the work being put down at £24,637. Fivo business promises were erected in wood at a cost of £1924, and 13 in brick or concrete, the value of these latter being £54,098. Only two public buildings were erected —one in wood at a cost of £675 and tho other in brick and concreto at a cost of £16,332. Permits for 124 other buildings were issued, these comprising mainly motor sheds and outhouses, tho cost being put down at £3629. Altogether a total of 509 permits was issued for the year. In 1925“, 435 permits were issued, in 1924 393, in 1923 322 and in 1922 330.

For the month of March itself 57 permits were issued, the value of the building construction being put down at £24,832. Houses (24) comprised tho major portion of this sum, the aggregate cost of erection being £17,049. Twenty permits were issued for alterations and additions costing £2926, while permits for 13 other buildings aggregated £857.
