(From Our Own Correspondent.) Mr F. H. Taylor, headmaster of the Makorua school, has been granted leave of absence and left for Auckland to attond tho wedding of his brother, Rev. C. R. Taylor, late of Brooklyn, Wellington. Rev. Taylor has been appointed to tho charge of the Greytown and Fcathcrstoil circuit and takos up his duties there shortly. Mr and Mrs Cairns, of Tnkaanu, Taupo, spent the week-end with friends in Shannon. Mr James Hennessey and Miss Hennessey left on Monday afternoon for Wellington en routo for San Francisco. Tho sheep weight guessing—which competition was in charge of Mr J. Richardson, at the sports on Saturday—resulted in Mr C. A. Pritchard winning tho two sheep with 158ilbf the correct weight being 1591 b. The lamb, which was 521 b in weight, was won by Mr G. Jude, who guessed 601 b. An outbreak of fire at Mr Hardie’s tailoring shop caused about £IOO worth of damage to the stock and building. The latter, which is owned by Mrs McPherson, is not insured, but Mr Hardic’s stock and fittings are covered, nevertheless ho will be a heavy loser through damage from smoko and water. No less than seven competitors guessed tho correct idontity of tho “Silent Domino” on Saturday and on tho draw Mrs Burns won the prize. On tho farmers’ and town babies’ stalls on Saturday the following competitions were cornplotcd: Dinner, Mrs Saxon; teapot, Mrs Radford; kettle, Mr Watkins; cake-stand, ( Mr A. T. White; cake, Mrs Radford.

Tho sale of work and produce following tho Methodist Church harvest festival took place on Tuosday afternoon and evening. There was a good attendance of tho publio only too eager to tako advantage of tho many bargains offering. The sweets and cakes stall was a particularly well stocked one and tho goods found ready sale. The following are some of the leaders of a very willing band of workers: — Plain sowing stall, Mcsdnmes Mardon and Barber; produce, Mesdamcß Swindlehurst, Hill and Pettitt; sweets and cakos, Mesdames Hewitt and Riches; bran tub, Missos E. Hill and E. Roberts; tea rooms, Mesdames Quarrio and Brassington. Members of the senior, junior and third grade football teams will bo competing in the seven-a-side tourney in Levin on Easter Saturday, tho thirds being: J. Humphries, Slade, Whaka, Crawford, L. Bowler, J. White and IL Hibbcll; emergencies, J. Hibbell, P. Bowlor and H. Rettir. A team of thirds will also meet a team from St. Patrick’s, Palmerston Nprth, on Easter Monday at Shannon. In recent letters received from Miss Winnie Pickles, who is now studying at the Sydney Conscrvatorium of Music, she mentions that tho weather has been very trying, the heat being greater than felt in Sydney for somo years, but, nevertheless, she is getting in a great deal of work and has already earned the distinction of a position in the senior orchestra. Constable Shannon has returned to his dutios in Shannon after having been relieving in Otnki for some considerable time. A special meeting of tho Borough Council was held on Tuesday evening, when Cr E. Butt was installed in the position of Mayor of the borough. Cr Spencer, on behalf of tho councillors, congratulated the Mayor on his election, and said that His Worship was assured of the co-operation and assistance of the councillors. In reply tho Mayor said that he would do his best for the good of the town and hoped he would bo able to keep up tho high standard set by his predecessor. Tho question of a quarry site is not being lost sight of by the council and a visit is to be mado at an early date to inspect the stone-crusher of the Horowhenui county. Reference was made at the council meeting on Tuosday evening to bringing the local by-laws up to date, and the town clerk was instructed to bring down a report on same. Cr Spencer has been appointed to represent the council at a conference in Wellington called by the Prime Minister to discuss his housing scheme. Cr Thwaites, reporting to the council on the conference of thoso interested in getting tho Koputaroa-Bucklcy road formed, held in Palmerston Nprth on Tuesday, said that the Prime Minister had asked for an independent survey of tho routo, and representations were therefore being made to him to have the matter expedited. It was also mentioned that in all probability tho outlet from Shannon to the proposed now Fpxton-Shannon bridgo would follow the present Foxton road as far as Bryant’s bridge and thence direct to tho now bridge. Tho Government valuers are at present at work in tho borough making a revaluation as asked for by the council. This now valuation should be available about six weeks hence.
