WARNING TO TAXI-MEN.
BOUND BY ENGAGEMENTS. CONVICTION AT HAMILTON. HAMILTON, March 26. The fact that a taxi-driver could n/ot AvithdraAV from an engagement Avithout the consent of the other party Avas emphasised in the Hamilton Police Court to-day, Avhen Geo. Miles Avas convicted and ordered to pay costs on a charge that, being’the driver of a motor-cab licensed by the Hamilton Borough Council, he refused to pumtaally carry out an engagement he had agreed .to perform. The incident out of which the charge arose occurred during the recent visit of the Governor-General to -Hamilton. It Avas stated that Miles had been engaged to assist in driving the Vice-Regal party. After Avaiting at the raihvay station to convey the .luggage to the hotel he Avas told that there Avas so much that it Avould have to be sent by lorry, and his services Avould not be - required until the follOAA'ing morning. He thereupon told tho toAvn clerk, under Avl/jse instructions he Avas acting, that he i had better get someone else to do the remainder of the A\-ork. Defendant Avas later given an opportunity of performing the remainder of his" engagement, but refused to do so. The borough traffic inspector, who conducted the prosecution, stated that the case Avas the first of its kind in Hamilton, and Avas brought merely as a Avarning.
