LONG SERVICE.
HIS EXCELLENCY PRESENTS MEDALS. TO MAJOR JICKELL AND LIEUTENANT SLIPPER. '■ One of the duties performed by His Excellency the Governor-General at the civic reception accorded him yesterday afternoon was the presentation of medals to Major S. Jickell and Lieutenant Slipper. His Excellency stated that it was his pleasing duty to have to present service medals to two oliicers of long and distinguished service in the cause of their country. Major Jickell, he noted, had served his country and Empire for over 20 years as an officer, and tho territorial movement owed’ a great deal to him, for Major Jickell had willingly given all his professional knowledge in time of peace and Avar to aid those concerned with Empire defence.
Lieutenant Slipper was a member of the Se\ 7 cnth New Zealand Mounted Rifles, and had also given good service as an officer over a period of 20 years. He had served the forces in many capacities before the war, through it, and still continued to do so.
As His Excellency pinned the medals on to the uniforms of the recipients he learned that Major Jickell’s total length of service Avas 53 years and Lieutenant Slipper’s-32 years, but in connection Avith the medals in question 4he records only took into account tho period of commissioned service.
