(From Our Own Correspondent.) f Six ladies and six men from tlio Glen Oroua Tennis Club visited the local courts on Saturday afternoon, suffering defeat at tho hands of the homo representatives by a large margin, tho scores being: Riongolea 20 sets and 132 games, Glen Oroua 4 sets and 69 games. A high easterly wind marred an otherwise pleasant afternoon and as a consequence the standard of play sutfered. Afternoon tea was provided by tho ladies. Tho ladies’ and men’s handicap singles tournament for the roso bowl and Morcuin Cup havo created much interest. Tho men’s final was played on Wednesday afternoon between A- Huqt (owe 15) and M. Amadio (owo 12) and after a keen contest result in a win for Amadio, who holds tho Morcum Cup for the 1926 season. Last season’s holder, W. Boddy, was unable to compete owing tp hi 3 departure for England. Tho ladies ’singles are now in tho third round and tho reifiain'ing players aro asked to completo their matches as scon as possible. DANCE. The local Tennis Club conducted a very successful danco in the Coronation Hall when visitors were present from Feilding, Palmerston North, Bulls, Foxton, and tho surrounding district. As a result the funds of tho club will benefit materially. The M.C.s were Messrs W. Boddy and C. McCall. Mr McCall also carried out the secretarial duties. Tho excellent supper arrangements were in the hands of of a ladies’ committee headed by Mrs Smith.

TOKOMARU.

On Thursday tho drill instructress, Miss Blackburn, visited tho school. During tho week Mr L, H. McAlpine, Dominion organiser of tho New Zealand l 1 armers’ Union, paid a visit to tho district, canvassing for members. Wo aro informed that his efforts woro highly satisfactory, 110 will bo giving an address at Shannon at an early date, and it is anticipated that a number of farmers will attend for tho purpose of obtaining further information as to what tho union is doing. On Saturday afternoon a number of settlers journoyed to Shannon, their objective being the annual sports gathering'of the _ Shannon Amateur Athletic and Cycling Club. The weather proved fair and there was a record attendance. Since their last mooting tho club has laid out a cyclo track, which was greatly appreciated by the contestants. Tho -mooting was financially a great success and the officials i re to be congratulated on the punctuality with which tho events wero got olf. Of the competitors taking part from Tokoinaru, Mise Milno was successful in winning tho 75 yards girls’ handicap with Miss I. Milne filling the second position. Tho Makerua Drainago Board’s operatives aro approaching completion- and it is anticipated that a lew more weeks will see banking scheme finished. Mr E. Stokes, who lias tho contract for raising the bank along tho Tokomaru river, is making oatisfuctoiy progress. The contractors for tho claying and metalling of tile Ashlea-Temukanui road will shortly bo ready to start tho metalling. Tho trustees of tho Tokomaru Domain Board are malting arrangements with Mr W. H. Miles to toko over the section purchased by hint from Mr Liggins. It is expected tho board will take control' about the middle of May. Gn Thursday tho school Easter vacation begins. Miss Tolley, whoso position has been a temporary one, will journey to her homo in Wellington and Miss Wingfield will spend her holidays at her homo in Pahiatua. Miss Armstrong will .journey to tho Wairarapa. A footballers’ mooting is to lako placo to-night, at 7.30 o’clock.

The third annual meeting of the Shannon Amateur Athletic and Cycling Club wag held on tho Domain on Saturday. The club wero fortunate in having a fine day. The Domain had undergone considerable improvements since the lastgathering . two years ago, a notiocablo feature being the up-to<dato cycling track. V isiting side-shows and several local ones, besides a very busy refreshment tent, under the control of the “Farmers’ Baby” candidate committee in tho Plunkot carnival, gave a very animated appearance to the grounds. The attendance, which wa6 close on a thousand, was very gratifying to those who had worked so hard to mako the meeting a success. The officials aro to bo congratulated on their splendid arrangements. Worthy of remark is the fact that a largo number of people who never left their point of vantage near tho finishing post all day, thero being sometiling of interest—sometimes triple items—timing the whole programme, and the ovents being get off to the advertised time without any waiting between events kept up a continual interest. Tlio only imported officials wero Messrs G. Watson (hanaicapper and starter) and J. Stallard (mogaphonist) both of Levin, and Mr J. Whyte, timekeeper (Tokomaru). The thanks of the ciub are due to these gentlemen for their assistance. The competitors, including several from Wellington and the districts surrounding PalmerNorth, spoke in glowing terms of the cycling track. Tho races resulted: 100yds maiden: S. Ferguson 1.
