STRANGE STORY
AGED WOMAN'S DEATH
THREE DAUGHTERS INSANE,
PECULIAR BELIEFS HELD. (By Electric Telegraph—Copyright.) Received March 24, 9.30 a.m. LONDON, March 23. Tho strangest evidence was heard at tho inquest on Mrs Nixon, aged 80, who was found dead in a houso occupied by her three daughters and who were subsequently certified to be insane.
Neighbours attested to hearing noises that suggested the daughters wero screaming and quarrelling. A constable gave evidence that one of the daughters declared: “Mother is not dead; God is looking after her.” Another said: “She was never ill; God took her and told us to leave her alone.”
A doctor expressed the opinion that the woman probably lied in the chair, to which the corpse was found fastened by a belt. Tho daughters wore firmly convinced that the youngest sister was a prophetess and heard God’s voice, and tho others obeyed her implicitly. Tho youngest daughter told him that a bird whistling in a tree was God’s way of telling her what to do. Witness found all three daughters in a completely ecstatic condition.
A verdict was returned that thero was insufficient evidonco to show the cause of death.—A. and N.Z. cable.
