Mr Alex. McDonald, of To Koau station, Kuripapango, Hawke’s Bay, is a visitor to Palmerston North.

Mr T. It. Hodder is at present indisposed, and will be confined to his home for a few days. A London cablegram states that the King has approved of the appointment of Lord Somers as Governor of Victoria.

Sir James Allen is sailing for New Zealand in August. Many farewell tributes aro being arranged before his departure, states a London cable. Mr H. A. Matthews has been appointed by the Wairarapa A. and P. Society a delegate to tne conference of the National Sheep Breeders’ Association in England in July. Rev. J. Thomson Macky, of Knox Presbyterian Church, Dannevirke, who has been suffering from whooping cough in Auckland for several weeks, is now sufficiently recovered to return to his home.

A Melbourne cablegram states that Mr Bruce, Primo Minister of Australia has announced the appointment of Mr G. A. Julius, who graduated in engineering at the University of New Zealand in 1896, _ a son of Archbishop Julius, as chairman of the executive committee of the Institute of Science and Industry. Plis Excellency, the Governor-Gen-eral, has notified the officers of St. Andrew’s Church that, provided the forthcoming week-end is spent in Palmerston North, the Vice-Regal party will attend worship there on Sunday. It is the practice of His Excellency to attend on Sundays at the senior Presbyterian Church in whatever town he spends the week-ends. Mr A. J. Harrop, of Cambridge University, and formerly of Canterbury New Zealand, was awarded the degree of Doctor of Philosophy (as announced yesterday) for research into tho earliest relations between England and New Zealand on the evo of the Maori Wars, which has thrown a new light on the history of the New Zealand Company, and also on French and German colonising projects (states a Press Association cablegram from London).
