RE-VISITS PALMERSTON NORTH

A DISTINGUISHED STATESMAN. The Hon. AV. Pomber Rooves and Airs Reoves, who nro re-visiting the Dominion after an absenco of some 30 years, arrived in Palmerston North by train early this afternoon, when Mr Rooves addressed tho Citizens’ Luncheon Club. Mr and Airs Reeves were accompanied by Airs Lascelles, a sister of tho hitter, and by Aicssrs F. At. Jorvis and W. F. Spnrham, of AVollington. Approached by a “Standard” reporter ns lie was met by Messrs A. Grigor and J. H. Stevens,. Hon. Mr Reeves stated that ho bad noticed a great change in tho Dominion since ho left it so ninny years ago—a change, ho added, which denoted a material ndvanco in tho progress of tho country. Palmerston North is well-known io former Dominion statesman, for he visited this ceinro on many occasions during his Parliamentary career. A DISTINGUISHED CAREER. A distinguished earocr has boon tho lot of the Hon. AV. Pembor Reeves, born in Canterbury, Now Zealand, in 1857, ho is tho eldest son of tho lato Hon. AVilliam Reeves. Ho was educated at Christ’s College gaining five scholarships, and entered professional life ns a barrister, but, preferring journalism, ho subsequently edited tho Canterbury Times and later the Lyttloton Times. Tho position of chairman of directors of tho New Zealand Times he also occupied. From 18S7 to 1890 ho represented St. Albans (Christchurch) in Parliament and was member for tho city of Christchurch from 1891 to 1896. During his distinguished Parliamentary career Air Reeves was Minister of Education, and Alinister of Labour and Justice, resigning to accept tho post of New ’Zealand Agent-General which ho held until 1909. Ho wns a director of tho London School of Economics from 1908 to 1920, is still chairman of tho National Bank of New Zealand, nnd was chairman of the Anglo-Hellenic League. He is a Commander of tho Order of the Saviour (Greece). Some of the institutions with which he Las been prominently associated aro the Senate University of London, tho Pacific Cable Board, the Commercial'lntelligence Board of Trade and English Commission on Shipping Rings. Be has represented New Zealand at various conferences in Europe, America and Australia. His literary works include “State Experiments in Australia and New Zealand,” “The Long AVhito Cloud,” and “An introduction to tho History of Socialism and Communism,” while he ha 9 also been a contributor to supplementary volumes of the Encyclopedia Bri’tannica and has published a volume of New Zealand verse. In his earlier days he was an athletic sports enthusiast and represented Canterbury Province at football and cricket. Cycling, lawn tennis, billiards and book collecting aro his favourite recreational hobbies.
