Hobbs, the well-known cricketer, replying to an invitation to read tho lesson at tho sportsmen’3 service at St. Mark’s Church, Mitcham, said: “I would rather face the Australian bowling for three weeks than read tho lesson in church.” Instead Hobbs took up the collection, and Knight, a Surrey cricketer, read tho lesson. Rev. Roberts, a popular Rugby referee, conducted tho service and the Bishop of Woolwich was tho preacher.—A. and N.Z. cable.
