BRIDEGROOM’S DELIMMA.
DIDN’T KNOW GIRL’S MOTHER. MATTER OF. A FAMILY SECRET. THAMES, Jan. 22. David Ernest Rickit was committed for trial yesterday on a charge of making a false declaration to tho Registrar of Marriages in order to obtain a marriage certificate. Detective Culloty, of Hamilton, prosecuted. The evidence disclosed that Rickct went with the grandmother of tho bride to get a certificate. Ho stated that tho girl was over sixteen, whereas she was born in January, 1911; also that there was no objection to tho marriage. Tho mother gave evidence that her child was taken care of by the grandmother, and she was not asked for permission for her daughter to marry' Rickit, but she approved of him. Tho fact that she was the mother of the girl was kept secret and ltickit did not know of the relationship. The Registrar, Mr. H. R. Bush, said he was not in a position to know if accused was aware the statements wero untrue. He was unable to give tho name of the girl’s mother. Accused told the police the girl’s mother had told him she was over sixteen, but later the police found ho meant the girl’s grandmother. Accused reserved his defence and bail was allowed.
