VALEDICTORY.
RAILWAY OFFICERS HONOURED
A most successful social evening was held in tho Railway Hall on Saturday, when a largo number of railway servants attended to recognise tlio services of Messrs J. Camnjock, J. W. Lucas and C. E. Pepperell. Tho chairman, Mr J. Cornish, 111 addressing tho gathering, referred in happy vein to ;tho many excellent qualities of tho guests of the evening and as tangible expression:, of tho esteem in which they are lieu 1 \j their fellow-members of the outside staff asked Mr Lucas to accept a solid leather suitcase, Mr Cammock a travelling rug and Mr Pepperell a case of pipes. Messrs Lucas and Cammock suitably responded, while in tho unavoidable absence of Mr Pepperell Mr O’Donnell accepted tho gifts on his behalf. During the course of the evening a toast list was lioiioureclj while a splendid programme of instrumental and vocal items was provided by Messrs Smith, Casey, Davis Williams (2), Murphy/ Bowater and Eagan. Mr Smith did excellent duty in the role of acconipanist.

Tho Department of Agriculture has received tlio following 'cablegram, dated January 20, from the High Commissioner for New Zealand, London :—Wool sales opened yesterday, with larger attendance. Bidding hestitated for Merino 5 per cent., and inferior 71 per cent, lower, crossbred firm and michanged ; 189,000 bales available in series, of which 121,450 aro Australian and 43,250 New Zealand-
