RACING NEWS.

NOTES.

G. New, of Levin, has taken np his residence at Palmerston North, and has his team located in the stables owned by Mr D. O’lteilly. As “Dick” Johnson has decided not to persevere further with Rational, the one-time brilliant sprinter will again bo trained by J. Brown. Mr A. W. Broughton, who trained Mr R. Vautier’s team with success for some timo past, intends setting up as a public trainer. Mr Geo. Craw, of Linton, has sold his three-year-old colt Loch Moigh, by Nelson Derby from Flying Bells, to the Palmerston North sportsman, Mr J. A. Mitchell. v At a recent' meeting in South Australia, all the jockeys wero searched for electric batteries, but the investigation failed to disclose anything suspicious.

The Wellington sportsman Mr \J. R. McKenzio has won £0440 in stakes this season (up to January 14), made up as follows: —Great Bingen £4015, Acron £llsO, Silk Thread £605, Real the Great £275, Frisco Beau £271, Glendora £7O and Navolla £54.

At the conclusion of the Wellington meeting the New Plymouth trainer, E. George, will, it is understood, take Te Monanui, Oration, Hipo, Mint Leaf and probably other horses to Sydney. Mr and Mrs Graham will probably go across later to see To Monanui race. Ho races in the colours of Mrs Graham.

A Sydney paper, in discussing the win of Reremoana in the Railway at Ellerslie, remarks that Jack Cameron was unlucky in not being able to get The Hawk over. With all due respect to The Hawk, he would have had his work cut out to give the Ha-wera-trained horse 61b and a beating.

According to an American journal, the State of Mexico can boast of a very valuable handicai). This is tho Coffroth Handicap, tho ;value of which is £16,000. It is mentioned in connection with this race that the trainer and jockey of tho winner also receive something substantial from tho management. The rider of tho last winner of the Coffroth Handicap got a fine cottage.

Sydney racegoers would pride themselves on tho fact that'Randwick is as up to date in every way as any New Zealand racecourse. It is interesting to learn, therefore, that only on New Year’s Day at Randwick wore hurdles erected to separate first, second and third horses when they return to be unsaddled for weighing-in. Thesd partitions have been erected and have been in use on leading Dominion courses for several years, tho Manawatu Racing Club being tho first to have them erected.

It is said that Phil Green does not care for the Hawera tracks, and contemplates returning ’to Palmerston North.

The Manawatu Trotting Club will hold its next annual trotting meeting on tho Ashhurst racecourse on Wednesday, March 10.

The Christchurch Press says that Nita Colo, Lady Thelma anti Lady Nan, who have been on a visit to Real Guy, were shipped north to their owner, Mr J. A. Mitchell, of Palmerston North, last week. They were accompanied by two colt foals from Nita Colo and Lady Thelma, both' by Real Guy, and they are a pair of attractive youngsters.

The Dunedin sportsman, Mr G. J. Barton, whose horses are trained by W. J. Tompkinson, is having a successful season. His horses have won £4580 in stakes, Nelson Derby £2455, Napland £975, Bell Harold £BOO, Pattie Alto £135, Pearlie Chimes £IOO, Kean John £75 and Happy Rosa £4O.

Colin Gallimore, who held a No. 1 trainer’s license, died in Sydney rcculty. In his early days he was very successful rider at unregistered meetings, and, on the death ot his father, Mr G. Gillimore, took up training. His last winner was Ignition, while others prepared by him included Almsgiver and Petalster. He left a wife and three children.

The well-known Melbourne sportsman, Mr S. Green, has a valuable imported tliree-year-old who will race as Star d’Or. He is a brother to Zamboo (Sunstar —Airaishii), who won six races and over £IO,OOO in stakes in England last season. One of Zambo’sbest performances was his second to Solario in tho St. Leger at Doncaster. Star d’Or cost 900 guineas as a yearling. FOXTON RACING CLUB’S MEETING. CUP WONBY OPA. ANNIVERSARY HANDICAP TO BONOGNE. Save for a slight shower tho weather remained fine for the opening day of tho Foxton Racing Club’s meeting. Mr J. E. Henrys’ adjustments wero responsible for the closeness of the finishes, while Mr R. E. Hatch’s despatches wero all that could bo desired and Mr J. Cameron hoisted tho numbers quickly and accurately. After tho contest tor tho Anniversary Handicap, the stipendiary steward, Mr Wilson, had A. Downing (rider of Bonogne) carpeted for crossing Hyde Park and Tutankhamen, and as a result he will bo compelled to take a holiday

for three months. The following are the details of tho racing:— POROUTAAVHAO HACK HURDLES, of 160 sovs.; second horse 30 sovs. and third 15 sovs. One and a-half miles and 100 yards. 7G- R. Star Ranger went to the front early in the race and stayed there, stalling off the challenge of Star Stranger to win an exciting finish by a head. The time, 2.18 2-5, equals the record. The much-fancied Lady Cavendish easily accounted for tho Metropolitan Handicap, defeating Cawnporo by a length in the fast time of lmin lOJsec. Tlie Douro Cup was won decisively by tho Bulls-owned Kilbronsyth, following up liis opening day success. An inquiry was held into tho interference by Diogenes with Kilbronsyth in the Douro Cup. The bracketed pair, Stnr Stranger and Star Ranger, were solid favourites for the Racing Club liundicup and carried ovor £3OOO, more than £IOOO ahead of the second favourite, Enthusiasm (states the Dominion). Listening Post and Fool’s Paradise each carried over £IOOO in a pool which went over five figures for the first time at the meeting. The race can be easily described. St?r Ranger led

from Star Stranger throughout the race and entered the straight with two lengths ahead, which was reduced to a head at the post; a desperate race, run in time which equalled the New Zealand record for eleven furlongs established by Listening Post in the same race last year. The pair were well clear of the field in the finish. Listening Post ran a creditable race, and Fool’s Paradise also ran very well and just failed to see out tho distance. Enthusiasm was up with the field much earlier than in tho Cup, but she was beaten three furlongs from home. Surveyor was conspicious as they entered the straight, but fell back again. Clarinda and Kilceit never threatened danger.
