GALE IN AUCKLAND.
DAMAGE TO BUILDINGS. SMALL BOATS DRIVEN ASHORE. Per Press Association. AUCKLAND, Jan. 22. A heavy south-easterly gale sea in last night and continued to-day with increasing fury. Considerable damage was done ashore to buildings, many windows being blown in. Tho fruit crops suffered severely, the ripening fruit being stripped from many trees. The harbour felt the full forco of the gale, big waves washing the shores of the various bays. A number of small craft were driven ashore and severely damaged. On tho low land of tho railway along tho harbour front the embankment is standing up to it well, but it has been found necessary to lash down the service lines. Three launches and yachts, which were adrift in mid-harbour, were rescued by tow boats.
