FACED TIGER

WOMAN’S ORDEAL

CARTRIDGE MISSES,

CALCUTTA, Jan. 11

Mrs Smythies, tho wife of a forest officer in the United Provinces, had a most unpleasant experience on New Year’s Day while out shooting in the jungle at tho foothills of tho Himalayas. Sho fired at a tiger from her machan (observation post, usually fixed up a tree) while her husband, who was guarding tho entrance to a strip of iungle, twico drovo tho tigor back to her. Both his shots, unfortunately, missed.

Tho tiger then began climbing up tho tree, which was of a large, straight,- smoothlbarked species, and endeavoured to get into the maclian and attack Mrs Smythies. Tho latter most courageously rammed her riflo down tho tiger’s throat and pressed tho trigger, but the cartridge missed fire, and sho had no time to re-load. Mrs Smptliies attempted to get out of tho maclian, but fell. Her husband fired a third time as tho tiger was climbing tho tree, and hit it, but not fatally. Tho last and successful shot was a desperato affair, as by then tho tiger and Mrs Smythies were both in the machan.

Tho tiger was a good specimen, measuring 9 feet 3 inches.
