ENGLISH CAPTAIN. CHANCE OF GILLIGAN. LONDON, Jan. 11. The Daily News says that if A. E. Gilligan, who led the last English team in Australia, is lit next season, and if the pace of his bowling approaches that of tho 1924 season, he is almost certain to ho England’s captain in tho first test. . Then if he skippors a winning side he will undoubtedly continue to lead in the other games. Other man who must bo considered for tho captaincy are A. W. Carr ’(Notts), L. H. Tennyson (Hampshire), P. G. H. Fender (Surrey), F. S. G. Oalthorpe (Warwickshire), and Hubert Ashton. Carr would probably be the second choice and Tennyson the third. The writer adds: “Fender’s wiliness could outmatch that of the Australians, but ho is unpopular in Australia owing to his harmless newspaper x articles written in 1920, although it is not likely that his unpopularity would extend to the Australian players.”
