POOR LAW RELIEF
PROPOSALS IN BRITAIN ALTERATIONS IN LAWS. (By Electrio Telegraph—Copyright.') Received'January 21, 9.55 a.m. . LONDON, Jan. 20. The Daily Mail says: “When the Coalition Government in 1918 gave votes to persons receiving poor law relief, it struck a serious blow at sound local administration. Mr Baldwin’s Government has gradually realised that such persons should be disfranchised, and is preparing a bill for this purpose, and also to prohibit employees of guardians or councillors becoming candidates for any > local authority. “The bill will further empower the Minister of Health to supersede boards of guardians in certain cases. This is aimed against Poplarism, and shows that the Government recognises that Socialist local authorities are endeavouring to introduce the worst features of Socialism, granting extravagant outdoor relief and seeking to interfere with tho economic rate of wages by making it more profitable for a man to draw relief and remain idle than to work.” —Sydney Sun cable.
