SENSATION CAUSED
AT OXFORD UNIVERSITY,
COMMUNIST PROPAGANDA,
(By Electrio Telegraph.—Copyright.) Received January 21, 9.5 a.m. LONDON, Jan. 20.
A mild sensation has been caused at Oxford University by an allegsrtion that Communist propaganda is being conducted among Indian students, concerning which' a question >vas recently asked in the House of Commons. The upshot has been correspondence between tho Vice-Chancellor, tho proctors and the Queensland Rhodes scholar, Mr F. R. Stephenson, a sec-ond-year student, who has also given political addresses in Yorkshire, in which he was requested by tho proctors to give a written guarantee within 48 hours to cease propaganda among tho Indians while at the University, otherwise ho would bo “sent down.” Mr Stephenson signed the guarantee on Monday. Mr Stephenson, when interviewed, said that tho action of tho ViceChancellor, compelling him to sign a promiso not to endeavour to propagate Communist views directly or indirectly is quite in accordance with the conservative traditions of the Oxford authorities, who aro notorious for their resistance to the new and vital ideas of ench succeeding generation. But tho Vice-Chancellor has unlimited power. His word is law and I have no wish suddenly to discontinue my studios for honours in school philosophy, polities and economics.” —A. and N.Z. cable.
