GIFTS FOR MUSSOLINI.
WORSHIPPERS IN ITALY. PUDDINGS AND PORTRAITS. LONDON, Jan. 8. New Year gifts showered upon Signor Mussolini fill a room stacked to the ceiling, says the Rome correspondent of the Daily Mail. The amazing assortment includes portraits of obscure citizens who fondly imagine they strikingly resemble Italy’s hero. Other presents range from shampoo powder and hair restorer to fruit, sweets, wine, provisions, cakes, gingerbread, puddings, books, walking sticks, and boots (including a pair of iron boots). The accumulation is distributed to charities on every third day. Hundreds of artists sent Signor Mussolini his portrait in oils, water colour, or pen and ink. Some of the portraits were mounted in most costly frames, inlaid with mother-of-pearl. Many women sent portraits in needlework.
It is expected that still greater evidences of Signor Mussolini’s frenzied popularity will be seen after Epiphany, which is Italy’s chief occasion for sending gifts.
