FRENCH CIVIL SERVANTS.
ATTEMPTED DEMONSTRATION. PARIS, Jan. ’l7. . Civil servants attempted to 1 demonstrate in the Place do la Concorde because their salaries, they declared, were lower than last year. The Government put up the greatest show of force since war-time, posting cavalry, steel hclmeted municipal guards and police in all the streets leading to the place. After an unsuccessful attempt, the demonstrators threw snowballs, in which were concealed stones. Sevoral arrests quietened the remainder.—A. and N.Z. cable.
