ENTHUSIASM WINS THE CUP. Per Press Association. WELLINGTON, Jan. 20. The Wellington Racing Club’s summer carnival opened in beautiful weather, with a large attendance and on a fast track. The totalisator investments totalled £48,309 as against £48,485 10s for the corresponding day last year. Additional results: EITZHERBERT HANDICAP of 350 sovs., five furlongs. 5 Lady Desmond (J. S. Enthusiasm came fast from the entrance of the straight and had the field beaten a furlong from home. Stalling off determined challenges from To Monanui and Star Stranger, she won by a length, a neck separating second and third horses. Time, 2.31, equalling the race record. ANNIVERSARY HANDICAP of 500 sovs., one mile. 2 Tommy Dodd (F. E. Jones) 1 1 Modern ... ... ••• 2 12 Printemps ... ... 3 Also started: 5 Economist, 10 Agitato, 13 Rouex, 3 Father O’Flynn, 11 Allmarimba, 14 Clandhu, 4 Tiega, 7 Crossfire, 9 En Route. 15 Misgovern, 6 Retrospect, 8 Royal Diadem, 16 Revel. Won by two lengths, a neck between second and third. Time, 1.12*. WELLINGTON CUP. The bracketed pair, Star Ranger and Star Stranger, were always favourite for the Cup, in which Tho Banker and Beacon Light wero the only absentees (states the Dominion). Enthusiasm was a solid second choice, with Te Monanui, the Grand Knight-Royal Divorce-Fool’s Paradise bracket, and Listening Post the best backed of the others. Gala Day was very well supported. Surveyor was nibbled at, but the rest went out at long prices. It was a very fine contest, in which tho best backed horses filled the places, but it was unfortunate that the winner, in making hor run, should in the last furlong seriously interfere with Star Strangor and To Monanui at a very critical stago, while Gala Day and Grand Knight wero also sufferers by this same incident. Star Stranger had previously at the six furlong post got into trouble, so that he never had any of the luck of the race. He may not have beaten Enthusiasm without the interference, nor may. have Te Monanui, but it is difficult to judge to what extent it affected their chances. The top weight, Te Monanui, ran a great race. He was not prominent in the early part, but as they turned for home ho was holding a handy position on the rails and finished very well. Listening Post was amongst the rear division early, and finished well up. As they ran out of the straight Enthusiasm was whipperin of the bunch, although Muraahi was actually last, a long way back. Enthusiasm did not put in an appearance until round the turn, where she made her run on the outside and sustained it until she was up with the leaders, with a furlong to go. _ She may have won without the interference, and it is a pity that a fine performance of this sort should have been marred by the occurrence. Grand Knight ran a great race, being prominent all the way, and ho was perhaps one of the greatest sufferers | through the interference in this race. Royal Divorce and Fool’s Paradise were prominent in the early stages and for the greater portion of the journey, but they did not run the distance out, and Royal Divorce pulled up very lame. Surveyor got into a lot of trouble in the running, and then ran a fine race into eighth place. Tanadees ivas never prominent, and Muraahi rvas always well back. Star Ranger led the field from the mile post until well into the straight, when he was beaten. Clarinda and Tresham never threatened danger, but Waetea ran up in the middle stages and ran a creditable race. Gala Day was another whose chances were affected by Enthusiasm's crossing, and he was always among the leading half-dozen, running a very fine race. Kalakaua was not very prominent and finished last, but Martulla ran a great race and finished fourth. The paoe was solid all the way, and the time equals the record for the race held by Maioha and Insurrection, while it is only *sec outside the Australian and New Zealand record for the distance, held at Randwick by Gala Day. TELEGRAPH HANDICAP. After Enthusiasm’s win in the Cup Tamatete, who drew No 1, was made favourite for the open sprint, Hipo being a solid second choice. Black Cat, Peneus, Orchid, Set Sail and Shirley were well supported. The favourites were never very prominent, the race going to Cawnpore, who dashed up at the false rail and wore down Licinius, who had been in the lead practically all the way. Cawnpore was unplaced at Takapuna last Saturday, but he was well suited by the Trentham track. Licinius ran Iris best race to date, and was unlucky to strike tho winner. Set Sail was well placed throughout, and

hung on well into the fourth place. Pelham ran a very good race, and was finishing well. Shirley got out well, but ran fairly wide ooming into the straight, and finished fifth. Hipo was being hard ridden a long way from home, and never really threatened danger. Ilka was one of the pacemakers early, but faded out of the picture in the finish. Black Cat was unlucky, failing to get away well. Deluge and Mimetic were most disappointing, being the last pair to pass the post, Mimetic running off the course on the turn, while Deluge was fairly well placed at the top of the straight.

FOXTON MEETING. POPULAR HOLIDAY FIXTURE. COMMENCES TO-MORROW. The annual summer meeting of the Foxton Racing Club, which invariably proves a popular holday fixture with local and district residents, will be held on the club’s course at the coastal town to-morrow and Saturday. The recent rain has considerably improved the course so that it will not be surprising to find very few of the acceptors refusing their engagements. Special train arrangements have been made by the club, two outward-bound trains departing from Palmerston North at 9.40 and 10.10 on tho first day and one at 9.40 on the second day. The first race each day is timed for 11.45 a.m. POROUTAWHAO HURDLES, of 160 sovs. One mile and a half.

The opening event has attracted 12 acceptors, a recent > -inner in Axle being at the head or the weights—a position tho Treadmill gelding is qualified to fill. Suspicion has also recent performances to his credit, but further down the list comes Comedy Prince, who, should he take it into his head to do his best, would be one of the hardest to beat.

HIMATANGI HACK HANDICAP, of 150 sovs. Six furlongs. First Aero 9 0 Our Jack 7 7 Duetto 8 0 Inoo 7 7

Lady Isinglass 711 Desert Knight 7 4 Empire Camp 7 8 Calm Eve 7 0 First Acre, who is at the top ,of the weights in the Himatangi Hack Handicap, ran at Wellington yesterday, so may be an unlikely starter. He has been asked to give Duetto a 141 b handicap. Tho latter is a useful type of animal, but the locallyowned colt, if started, should prove the bettor of the pair at the weights. FOXTON CUP, of 400 sovs. One mile and a-quarter.

The Cup has atrtacted a field of eight runners, but high class is not very well represented. The topweight, Tall Timber, who hails from tho Auckland district, has been asked to concede the veteran Duo nine pounds. The form of the latter is uncertain, but fit and well he would be one of the hardest. The public will probably elect the northerner favourite on the day, but a certain amount of money will, without’doubt, bo found for Beaumont and Opa, the latter having been fancied in some quarters for ,th° Stratford Cup at New Year time. NOVICE STAKES, of 130 sovs. Six furlongs. Three-year-olds and upwards 8.5; two-year-olds 7.7, Starbird Somes Carmalt Capitulation llodmayne Pardon Partaga Accumulator Royal Elm Earl of Ashlea Henna » Carriglen Merry Sarto Hesitate Telephone Bonifanc Raiiopoto Pat Molto The good field of 19 is carded for the Novice Stakes, but without doubt the scratching pen will be freely employed on the day. Henna and Pardon are two likely sorts in the 8.5 division, while, figuring among the 7.7 division is the Elysian gelding Royal Elm, who has been well spoken of.

AWAHOU HACK WELTER HANDI-

Butter Scotch, a winner over the ranges at New Year time, does not appear to be unduly penalised. Anchor won over eight and a-half furlongs at Stratford and this pair should be in the firing line at the finish. Idanoe, who has proved somewhat of a disappointment, might well bo found with the leading division at the wire. Capitulation, who would have had many local followers on the strength of his run at Feilding, will, probably, be found an absentee.

ANNIVERSARY HANDICAP, of 200 sovs. Six furlongs.

The second leg of the double, the Anniversary Handicap, finds the good field of 14 runners carded. Class is fairly well represented and the winner seems to be well concealed. Bonogno has been given 191 b more weight than when he won at Stratford and it may prove too muoh. Beaumont, if reserved for this race, Hyde Park and King Cheops will command a good deal of support. MAROTIRI HACK HANDICAP, of 150 sovs. Five furlongs and a-lialf Quilfiro 9 0 Coot 7 7

Some excellent hacks are included in the five and a-half furlongs flutter, a winner at the Manawatu meeting in The Boltor being second top weight. First out may mean first home, but in Duetto and Epistle the Solferino gelding will find solid oppo-

gition. The course may not suit Royal Land. HERRINGTON WELTER HANDICAP, of 200 so vs. One mile.

The concluding event for the day finds a field of nine acceptors, i-ho Taranaki representative Esthoma, who, report has it, has been undergoing a special preparation, being at the head of the list. In view of the great performance put up by Fillette on the second day of the Slarton meeting, this game little mare promises to play a prominent part, but, the veteran, March Pit,, is not yet a back number.
