TENNIS TOURNAMENT

SATURDAY AFTERNOON’S PLAY. SOME GOOD FORM DISPLAYED. The initail rounds in the championship events of tho Palmerston North Lawn Tennis Club’s tournament were well advanced on Saturday afternoon, while a etart was also made with the handicaps. There was a good attendance of tho public and some interesting games, particularly among the ladies, were witnessed. In championship play Malfroy beat M. R. Jones, 4—6, 6—2, and R. H. Mliburn won from Hooper, 6—4, 6—2. Tho latter was a keenly contested match in which tho Napier man was extended. Tho other Napierite, Campbell, is allowing good form and easily "accounted for Clem. Ferkins gave a taste of his ability by running over Mawhiney, 6—l, 6—o. In the ladies’ division Miss G. Napier who was beaten by Miss'Whyte, 4 —6, 6—2, 6—3, fought a sterling losing battle. Miss R. Gardner, of Wellington, proved herself a clover and cool player with an aptitude for shrewd placing when she defeated Miss M. Lowry, 6—3, 7—5. Mrs F. B. Smith and Miss D. Wallace won their respective matches.

The local champion, E. D. Andrews, partnered by Mrs Smith, got home on Dr Christie and Miss Calver after a close contest.

THE CLUB DANCE. In tho evening the Palmerston North Tennis Club conducted a dance at the Anzac Club, nearly all the visiting players attending. A most enjoyablo evening was spent and tho thanks of those concerned are due to the ladies’ reception and the entertainment committees under the supervision of Mrs G. E. Haggitt. Mr J. W.
