BORROWING OF CARS.

ON INCREASE IN AUCKLAND

AUCKLAND, Jan. .3. Motor car thieving or, as criminal law terms it, “unlawful conversion,” is on the increase in Auckland, and there was an average of nearly two motor car thefts a week during tho year just closed. The police have done good work in tracing tho culprits, and when a capture has been made the evidence has almost always earned a conviction. Legislation has made tho sneeting home of an offence much, easier—the statute makes the borrowing of a car an offenco for which fines or imprisonment can bo imposed—and has frustrated tho habitual ioy-rider, who might bo cunning enough to prol vide his own benzine and so evade a theft charge. During tho year nearly 100 motor cars have been unlawfully converted to tho use of tho joy-rider, and not a few were' recovered in a damaged condition. =
