RACING NEWS.

SEVERAL MEETINGS CONCLUDED.

NGATA WINS AT MARTON. EAPINE BEATEN AT AUCKLAND. Saturday witu\. ed tlie conclusion of various racing and trotting meetings ..nick comm enced on New Year’s Day. The Auckland fixture, which started on Boxing Day, was also bought to a successful conclusion.

Decreased totalisator returns were a feature of. some of the gatherings.

MARXON MEETING. MOPT SUCCESSFUL FIXTURE. NGATA MAKES AMENDS. HEISLER’S SURPRISE WIN. The annual summer meeting of the Marton Jockey Club was brought to a most successful ci nclusion on Saturday when, despite the- somewhat uncertain nature of the elements in the morning, there was a record second day attendance of enthusiasts from all parts of the southern end of the Dominion. It had been feared that the change of venue from Marton to the Feilding course, owing to the alterations and improvements being effected to the club’s own property, might possibly have affected the gate returns. However, the fears preved unfounded for. although the climatic conditions were not altogether inviting, record crowds attended on both days, and speculation was brisk throughout, Saturday’s figures eclipsing those of the second day of the preceding year, the sum of £35,247 being handled as against £30,076. The aggregate for the two days reached the substantial figure of £75,793 as against £68,403 in 1925, an increase of £7390. The fields throughout the day, while by no means large, were of respectable dimensions and were productive of some excellent racing, the allotment of the weights by Mr Skipwith on tho second day being all that could be desired, close finishes being the order rather than the exception.

In the Aldworth Stakes, Ngata, who had disappointed his backers on the first clay, made amends, the Maniapoto gelding winning through from the locally-owned Imperial Spark in what was a particularly stirring finish. The Telegraph, tho big six for tho day, was annexed by the northerner Heisler, who was making his first appearance at the meeting, the consistent Orchid taking second honours. The Ladies’ Bracelet, for amateur riders, proved a most popular event,

ELECTRIC HACK HANDICAP, of 175 sovs., second horse 35 sovs. and third 20 sovs. Seven furlongs. 1 Air C. T. Keeble’s b m Bon Alarcli

(Boniform —Signal Alarcli) 4yrs, 8.13 (Alackie) 1 2 Mr F. Davis’s cli g Son o’ Aline, 4yrs., 8.7 (B. H. Morris) 2 3 Air J. E. Kelly’s cli m Capitulation, 6yrs., 7.0 (Burns) 3

Also started: 5 Asleep (Rosewarne) 7.8. 4 Strongholt (Stokes) 7.2, 6 Constellation (M. McDonald) 7.0, 7 Blood Red (Mills.) 7.0. ' Illingar was withdrawn, leaving a. field of eight runners to go to the post, Bon March, a winner on the previous day, being sent out a warm favourite, the Boniform maro and Son o’ Mino being well in advance of the others on the totalisator. Son o’ Mine, Constellation, Asleep and Blood Red were the order out from the tapes, but places quickly underwent a change, Constellation going to the front from Bon March, Son o’ Mine and Strongholt, Asleep having dropped back to last. Capitulation ran up to the leaders going round the bottom bend, Constellation still piloting the field when the straight was reached. In the race to the post, the three placed horses and Strongholt fought out the finish, tho quartette crossing the line together, Boil March being giver, tho verdict by a nose from Son o’ Mine, with Capitulation third a head back and Strongholt a similar distance back. The lastnamed was placed third, but the placings were later altered. Time, 1.30. ALDWORTH STAKES (open) of 450 sovs., second horse 00 sovs. and third 45 sovs. One milo and a distance. 1 Mr J. Bull’s b g Ngata (Maniapoto—Daisy l'aul), aged, 0.4 (B. H. Morris) 1 3 Mr C. P. Nash’s hr g Imperial Spark, Cyrs., 7.7 (Stokes) 2

the field being on a par with the strongest numerically for the day, and was productive of a very fair display of horsemanship. Kilburn, ridden by Mr J. Bull, jm\, a son of the wellknown owner, carried off the honours from tho Palmerston North huntsman, Air J. Waller. At the conclusion of the race the gold watch bracelet was 3 presented to Mrs MeManaway by Mr 1 R. E. Beckett, president of the Marton Club, while a whip, the gift of Mr T. A. Duncan, was handed to tho suc--3 cessful rider. A word of praise is due J to the officials, particularly the secre--1 tary, Air Arthur Way, for the manner in which the fixture was conducted, 3 everything being carried out expedi--3 tiously and in perfect order. Detailed results are as follow : , JUNCTION PLATE, of 150 sovs, scc- > ond horse 30 sovs. and third 15 sovs. 1 Five furlongs; all 8.0. ' 1 Air J. B. Gaisford’s b f Duetto ’ (Bisogne—Harmonious), 3yr-

s (Dulieu), 10 Oread (Burns), 4 Cani--3 gallen (Holmes), 9 Takaroa (llose- > warne), II Dale Ogden (Jenkins), 8 r Wembley (Hardaker). • The good field of 13 runners went to - tho post in tho opening event, AVara- - mau being tho only acceptor to refuse her engagement. From a fair dcs--3 patch Duetto, who had been sent out 3 a hot favourite, immediately went to 3 tho front from Royal Land, Quadal--3 quiver, Ruby Rod, Oread and AYem--3 bley, the order undergoing little change 3 ag the field raced for the bend, save j that AYanderlust and Royal Elm had • improved their positions. Tho favour- • ite had a two-length lead as they 3 straightened out for home and, although Royal Laud threw out a chal- ’ lchge, he could only get within throe i lengths of Duetto. AVanderlust was it similar distance back third, with Royal Ehn, Carrigallcn, AVembley, Oread and Dale Ogden next. Time, 1.2. SECOND HACK HURDLES, of 200 sovs., second horse 40 sovs. and third 20 sovs. One mile and a-half. 5 Air AA r . H. Ballinger’s blk g Axle (Treadwell —Aema), syrs., 9.7 (Alcßrearty) 1 1 Air F. F. Baine’s hr g Peter Rosa, aged, 10.3 (Bowden) 3 Also started; 2 Koanau (Jenkins) 10.8, 4 AA r aimatao (Towler) 10.2, Eiva Rosa (Tilson) 9.0, coupled with Peter Rosa, 6 Captain AYai (Gordon) 9.0. Alany Colours and Comedy Prince refused their engagements, leaving a field of seven acceptors, two of the

runners being bracketed on the totalisator. A chapter of incidents threatened to make the race a single dividend one for AA T aimatao, who had arrived by a late train, seemed likely to bo withdrawn. Then Captain AVai, who was evidently lame, was taken back to the paddock, but, following an inspection by the stewards, was again sent out. In tho meantime AVaimatao had arrived, but, after going down for his preliminary, was brought back, ; his rider having discovered that his ordinary shoes had not been replaced , with rucing plates. The field was ] kept waiting for the late arrival, the j rider of tho Benzonian veteran being 1 attired in tho colours of Comedy ] Prince, which added to the general ( confusion. Alatu, on the strength of ( his running on the first day, was sent j out a warm favourite .Tram Koauati, 1 but tho winner turned up in one of ] the outsiders in Axle, who was in the ; van throughout. Elva Rosa raced r with tho winner over the early portion , of the journey, with Captain AYai next, AVaimatao being last away. Passing through the straight AA’aimatao had run up into third place behind ' th© pacemakers with Peter Rosa and Alatu next. Turning for home Axle had opened up a three-length break - from Elva Rosa. The favourite made . a forward move at this stage and was 1 at the leader’s quarters as he took tho last hurdle. In a neck-and-neck struggle down the straight Axle gained 1 the verdict by a neck from the favour- 1 ite, with Peter Rosa third, a length 1 and a-lialf away. Ivoauau was fourth. Time, 2.48. <

2 Mr B. Burgess’s b m Kilceit, syrs., 8.1 (Mackie) 3 Also started: 4 White Comet (A. Seifert) 7.9. 5 Clandhu (Burns), 6 F.’llctte (Olsen). J , Of the seven acceptors, only Birthmark was withdrawn. Ngata _ was sent out a hot favourite and, while ho did not prove tho good thing expected —his victory being of the narrowest • ho pulled his backers through somewhat luckily. From an excellent despatch, Filletto went out as pacemaker on the release of the tapes, Clandhu, Kilceit, Ngata, Imperial Spark and White Comet being next in order. Going along the back White Comet made a forward move, while Imperial Spark had lost his position, the order at the entrance to the straight being Filletto; White Comet, Kilceit, Imperial Spark and Ngata. The last-

named got a. lucky run on the rails and in a great finish, just got up m time to win by a head from Imperial Spark who had taken tho lead, with ICilceit a head further away. 1< nct-te, who was fighting out tho finish in resolute fashion, was close up fourth. Time, 1.56 2-5 LADIES’ BRACELET, of 150 sovs. including a gold watch bracelet value 10 sovs. to the winner), second liorse 30 sovs. and third horse 15 sovs. (gentleman riders). 2 Air H. Also started: 6 Bonny Rill (Mr McClelland) 11.3, 3 Tawehi (Mr Green) 11.0, 1 Banjuko (Mr J. Morris) 10.12, 10 Carmalt (Mr McPherson) 10.7, 12 Gold Jinks (Mr MacWliinney) 10.7,5 Festival (Mr Taylor) 10.7, 11 Rcdmayno (Mr McK. Duncan) 10.7, d Supporter (Mr Syme) 10.7, 9 Chrissarto (Mr J. Shaw) 10.7. The good field of 12 candidates presented themselves in the Ladies’ Bracelet in which Banjuke, ridden by the well-known amateur rider, Mr J. Morris was sent out a hot favourite. Somo little delay was incurred in getting the field away but they were finally despatched in f"ir line. Tawehi, Revel and Raugi Sarto were the first to find their feet and were in the van as tne field passed through the straight. Racing along the back Revel went to tho front from Supporter and Ranji Sarto, with the favourite further back. Tho leader still held an advantage when the straight was entered, but in tho race to the post both Kilburn and Rangi Sarto passed him tho former winning nicely by a good length with Revel four lengths away. The favourite was fourth. Time. 1.52. TELEGRAPH HANDICAP (open), of 275 sovs., second horse 50 sovs. and third 25 sovs.; 6 furlongs. 4 Messrs Craike and Seifert’s 1> g Hoisler (Lord Multifid—Millie), aged, 7.0 (E. From an excellent despatch Ilcisler

was the first out from Ivin" Pot and Orchid, with Ruby Ring and Birkio next. Heislcr retained his position into the straight from King Pot, Orchid and Miss Hupana. Orchid immediately issued a challenge, but the leader retained his advantage, crossing the line with a length to the' good, Orchid being a- length and a half in front of King • . with Birkie a similar distance back Miss Hupana was fifth. Time, 1.14. FAREWELL HACi. HANDICAP, of 175 sovs., second horse 35 sovs. and third 20 sovs.; 6 furlongs. 2 Mr M. W. Higginson’s b f Sleet (Kilbroney Snowlike), 3vrs 9.11 (W. Bid) 1 1 Mr J. B. All the acceptors went to the post, Duetto being installed a firm favourite from Sleet. From a good despatch Duetto was first to show out from

Illingar, Girribillie, Ladv Glissar and Lin Arlington, Pangolin, who had done a. round of the course in his preliminary, bringing up the rear. Pounding the bend Girribillie had run up to the leader with Lady Glis*as, Lin Arlington; Illingar and Sleet next in order, but in • the run to the post Sleet put in a strong challenge, and in a great finish the consistent Kilbroney fid" got up to win. by a head, Illingar Lung two lengths bade in third place. Lin Arlington was fourth. Time, 1.15 2-5. TURAKINX WELTER (open), of 225 so vs., second horse 40 sovs. and

Mackie) 8.2, coupled with Beaumont, 3 Birthmark (Stokes) 8.0, 1 Master o’ Rourke (Dulicu). Tho withdrawal of Miss Hupana and Constellation left the field with six starters, but tho bracketing of Alabama and Beaumont made the event a one dividend race. Master O’Rorke was elected first fancy with Martulla second choice, but slowness out of the barrier ruined the favourite’s chances. Birthmark, Alabama, Beaumont, Martulla and Master O’Rourke was

tho order out of tho tapes, but after tho field had traversed a lurlong the

bracketed pair were together in the van, with Birthmark and Catcall next. At the bend Alaster O’Rourke had worked up into second placo, with Alartulla coming up on the inner. Tho last-named got a run on the rails and came through nicely to win by a head from Beaumont, Catcall being a length and a half back. Alaster O’Rourke was fourth and Birthmark next. Time, 1.29.
