NEW YEAR USHERED IN QUIETLY.
The New Year was ushered in very quietly as far as Palmerston North was concerned; in fact, New Year’s Evo was one of the most devoid of incident for many a long year. The town was very orderly and few people were in the streets at midnight, which fact was probably due to the rain which commenced to fall shortlv after ten o’clock. Opposite the Post Office, a few of tho bolder spirits assembled and made a half-hearted attempt to sing “Auld Lang Syne.” \ esterday largo numbers of people visited Feilding for the races, while others made picnic excursions, but for most people tho weather spoilt the enjoyment of the day. The cricket match between Manawatu and the touring Auckland team could not be commenced owing to the nature of the conditions and the bowling, croquet and tennis lawns were naturally not largely attended. J
A watch night service was held at the Congregational Church on New Tear s Eve, Rev. J. M. Stewart preaching to a fair attendance on Gratitude for the past and hopefulness for tho future.” Miss Rawlins presided at tho organ and rendered several items.
