A REMARKABLE ACHIEVEMENT.
HUNDRED HEADS FROM GRAIN.
ASHBURTON, Dec. 29. While farmers of Ashburton bounty are facing the prospect of a small harvest, Mr J. O’Grady, of Cameron street, claims to have established n world’s record yield. In May last, Mr O’Grady took iiis spade and carefully planted a single gram of wheat. In a lew weeks’ time, when it was above che ground, he cut it back, repeating this pruning five times in all. The wheat grew and sprouted well. Now. is over four feet in height, anr day carries 109 heads and 6976 A reporter who called on Mr did not count them up to sc the grower’s word for it. Tho wheat is very stroi%|| and calculation shows that giving similar results would 4000 bushels. If Mr O’GradyWg acre of it, and it threshed out W; estimate, he would collect sonuS|ffip about £I3OO at tho end of the seavMr O’Grady was formerly a sue cessful farmer, and his present achievement is a striking example of science applied to agricultural work, and is an index to the effect of intensive cultivation in the country.
