’ AUCKLAND TOURNAMENT. Per Press Association. Auckland, Dec. 30. The Auckland lawn tennis tournament finals resulted: Men’s singles.—Sturt beat Clark, 6 6—3. Men’s doubles.—Hunter and Sturt beat Grant and Nicholson, 6—l, 6 —3. Combined doubles. —Steele and Miss Maxwell heat Western and Miss Bryant, 7—5, I—6, 6—l. BIG TOURNAMENT. APPROACHING FINAL STAGES. Per Press Association. CHRISTCHRCH, Dec. 30. Finals and semi-finals were reached in the New Zealand tennis. championships to-day. Tho weather was very hot with a rising nor’-wester, which promised to ho enervating and possibly interfere with play. The first match finished was the girls’ junior finals, in which Dulcie Nicholls, tho holder for two years, beat Margaret Gibson of Timaru. The Auckland girl lost the lead at 4—3 in the first set, hut by courtcraft and drawing her opponent in and out managed to win tho first set by a narrow margin. Then she settled down to win at 6 —o. Malfroy won the hoys’ championship easily enough, but Lucas fought hard and took the second set. It was extraordinarily good tennis, and showed the value of the Wellington coaching system. Details are as follow : Girls’ singles, final: Dulcio Nfcholls beat Margaret Gibson, 6 —5, 6 —o. Boys’ singles, final: Malfroy beat Lucas, 6 —3, 4—6, 6 —2. Ladies’ singles, semi-finals: Mrs Scott beat Miss Marjorie MacFarlane, 4 —6, 6 —4, 6 —3; Miss Speirs beat Miss Knight, 6 —l, 3—6, 7—5. _ Men’s doubles, semi-final: Ollivier and Soav beat Hodge and Parker, 79, 6 —l, 7 —5, 2—6, 6—3.
