OPENING ROUNDS’ PLAY. Per Press Association. DUNEDIN, Dec. 28. The New Zealand Chess Congress opened on Saturday afternoon. The players have been divided as follow: — Section A: Miller (Westport), Dunlop (Otago) Moil- (Auckland), Severn© (Nelson), Barnes (Wellington), Crakanthorp (Sydney), Gyles (Wellington), E. E. Hicks (Ngaio), Fenwick (Hamilton). Section B: Purdy (New South Wales), Anderson, Fairburn, Kelling and E. A. Hicks (Wellington), Davies and Stenhouse (Otago), Erskine (Victoria), Pihl (Christchurch). First Round.—Barnes had a bye in Section A* Davies a bye in Section B. Crakanthorp beat Miller, Gyles beat Dunlop, Moil* beat E. E. Hicks, Fenwick beat Severne, Pilil beat Purdy, Anderson beat E. A. Hicks, Kelling beat Stenhouse, Erskine beat Fairburn. Second round.—Severne beat Hicks, Moir beat Gyles, Anderson beat Purdy, Erskine beat Davies, Fairburn beat Stenhouse, Barnes beat Fenwick, Dunlop beat Millar. Third round.—Crakanthorp heat Dunlop, Fairburn beat Hicks, Purdy beat Kelling, Moir beat Millar. It was decided by a majority of the competitors that the four top players (n each section shrill combine in tho final section and play off for the championship. .
