RACING CARNIVAL.

CONTINUATION OF MEETINGS.

INCREASE IN TOTALISATOB INVESTMENTS.

The Christmas racing carnival was continued in various parts of New Zealand yesterday under favourable weather conditions, with large attendances, and in most cases with substantially increased totalisator investments. Altogether four galloping and three trotting meetings were held, the most important of the former being the Manawatu Club’s gathering, while the big trotting - fixture was at Auckland.

MANAWATU MEETING. ANOTHER LARGE ATTENDANCE. SURPRISE WIN IN AWAPUNI HANDICAP. •Brilliant weather again prevailed for the second day of the Manawatu Racing Club’s summer meeting held at Awapuni yesterday, when another large attendance of racing enthusiasts was recorded. Speculation was brisk throughout the day and, despite the fact that backers were, in the majority of cases, somewhat astray, the totalisator returns witnessed the substantial increase of £9,847 as compared with the second day last year, making a total increase for the two days of £17,309, and of £17,921 as compared with 1923. The track was somewhat hard and the free use of the scratching pen was no doubt duo to this fact. Nevertheless, the fields were, savo in the case of the Palmerston North Stakes, good and some excellent racing was witnessed, the finish in the President’s Handicap being a particularly fine one, the winner turning up in Ngata, who had displayed promising form on the opening day in the running of the Manawatu Cup. The victory was, however, by the narrowest of margins, the lesser-fancied lightweight, Olympic, making a big bid to wrest the honours, while Tanadees and the lo-cally-owned Imperial Spark also played prominent parts in an exciting finish. The Stakes proved as usual to be a one dividend race, only four of the eight acceptors going to the post. Motl<?y, as a result of her victory over Tamatete at Feilding, was elected a good favourite from Peneus, with the veteran 100 tickets further away in the order of betting. The public’s confidence was not misplaced, for Mr G. M. Currie’s candidate duly won from Peneus, with Tamatete in third place. The final race of the day was productive of heavy betting and incidentally provided the largest dividend for the two days,, the little-fancied Miss Hupana bringing off a surprise victory and returning her backers a handsome dividend.

DUNEDIN MEETING. CIRCULATION WINS ST. ANDREW’S HANDICAP. (Per Press Association.) DUNEDIN, Dec. 28. The Concluding day of the Dunedin Jockey Club’s summer meeting opened in fine but overcast weather, with an absence of wind, until the fifth race, when rain fell for a period. There was a good attendance. The track was somewhat on the firm side, this fact accounting for the withdrawal of a number of horses with engagements ahead in the south or suffering from tenderness. The totalisator investments for the day were £29,325 10s, compared with £23,985 10s last. year, making tho total for the meeting £64,50/ 10s, an increase of £ll,llß 10s. Additional results:

Mangatoetoo was the only withdrawal, leaving the good field of 13 runners, of which Kilbronsyth was elected first favourite, the Kilbroney gelding carrying 700 odd tickets more than the second elect, Nino of Spades. From an even dispatch Nine of Spades led a bunched field down the back straight, Joyeuse, Ivyla and Monday attending him closely. At the back bend the order among the leaders had not undergone any change, but the field had again closed up, Blue Peter and Constellation being with the pacemakers. In the run to the post Nine of Spades opened up a break, but Kilbronsyth, displaying a great turn of speed, came from the middle of the field and, steadily overhauling the leader, got up in time to snatch the victory by a nose, with The Tank two lengths back in third place, just in front of Anldct. Time, 1-28 2-5.

Brown) 7.0. Patuki and Bcmnure refused their engagements, thus reducing the field to nine runners, Degage, Agitato and Bright Day carrying the major portion of the totalisator investments. A good even dispatch saw Degage, Agitato and Ring Potoa secure positions in the van when the crowded field had negotiated the turn going out of the straight. Going along the back the order was .Ring Potoa, Agitato, Degage, Fillette, Kilceit and Scotch Mixture, Zero Hour and Rouex bringing up the rear of a well-bunelied field. Rounding the bend towards the straight Bright Day worked his way forward and landed first into the straight from Ring Potoa and Scotch Mixture. In the run home, Degage issued a challenge to the leader, but under pressure Bright Day responded and hold a half-head advantage as the pair flashed past the post. Rouex came fast over the last bit and got up in time to take third honours from the consistent Fillette, three lengths separating second and third horses. Time 1.47 3-5.

est investments for the day, the totalisator carrying the good figure of £7150, a keen betting race finding Licinius installed first favourite, carrying 110 tickets more than Shirley, with Ilka and Orchid also in demand. From a ragged start Ilka, Licinius, Shirley, King Pot and Orchid were the first to show out, Beaumont and Misgovern, who had dwelt on the mark, being in the rear. The order underwent little change racing to the turn, save that Megalo had worked up into the first division. Ilka landed first into the straight, being closely attended by King Pot, Licinius, Megalo and. Shirley, while Miss Hupana immediately rushed up to the leaders. ™ heads straightened out Licinius fen, but his jockey, J. Barry, escaped serious injury.
