FIREBLIGHT APPEARS.
PORT ALBERT ORCHARDS. DISEASE IbTMILD FORM. AUCKLAND, Dec. 26. A serious outbreak of fire blight has occurred at Port Albert, and a number of orchards that have previously been immune have been attacked. So far the dreaded disease is in a mild form of blossom infection, and has not spread into the> branches of the trees. Tho orchardists are now cutting out and burning the affected portions in the hope of keeping the diseas efrom spreading. Shold tho fire blight prove hard and expensive to keep under control it is probable that a number of orchards will be cut out altogether and tlie ground used for dairying, as tho financial returns from fruit growing have been very poor during the past three years. Except for fire blight the orchards are looking well. The fruit is very clean and free from codlin moth and black spot. The crop will probably be larger than that of last season, and arrangements have been made to export about 15,000 cases from the district to the English markets. The long spell of fine weather lias dried up many of the water holes, and difficulty has been experienced in obtaining water for spraying purposes.
